Total opening of Coop Marktgass in Bern with a unique shop concept
bern

The remodelling is over and “Coop Marktgass Bern” in the city centre presents itself with a new, exceptional shop concept. In addition to a state-of-the-art supermarket, there is a vinotheque, a beer and beverage world and an inviting lounge on the 1st floor. On the ground floor there is now a kiosk, a flower department, a bakery as well as a coffee bar and a food court.

The remodelling took 7 months. The realisation of the project in such a short time was quite exceptional and required a lot of coordination and flexibility. Not only because of the makeover but also because the supermarket remained open throughout the remodeling. Due to the location in Bern’s city centre, the positioning of the gas cooler and the installation of the refrigeration cabinets presented some challenges. The new refrigeration cabinets were moved through a window-front with a mobile crane whereas the 2-tonne gas cooler had to be transported by helicopter (see pictures below).

In the basement, existing walk-in-coolers were removed and replaced by the machinery room for the new CO2 refrigeration system. In addition, cold- and freezer rooms were enlarged for the new pro- duction facility. By using natural refrigerant CO2 in combination with ejectors, an efficiency increase of 30 % is achieved, which outlines a progressive and environmentally friendly solution.

We are proud, having been part of this extraordinary project as refrigeration engineers and would like to thank all the people involved for the great cooperation.
